| dc.description.abstract | This article looks at the fiqhi formulations of the divorce law through the lense of the Qur’anic verse (al-Baqarah, 2:228). Whereas the leading schools of fiqh have articulated a regime of divorce law that is decidedly onesided and generates a degree of insecurity in the Muslim family, the Qur’anic vision of divorce law and the rights generally between the spouses is one of parity and equivalence. It seems that some early interpreters of the Qur’an were also influenced by the medieval society values to provide lopsided readings of the Qur’an. This article develops that narrative. | eng |
