| dc.description.abstract | Cochlear implants (CIs) are inner ear prostheses that enable people with profound hearing loss to perceive acoustic stimuli. In this thesis German-language CI simulations for CI users at different stages of rehabilitation were created. These simulations were used to determine perceived sound quality and investigate potential influencing factors. A software sound tool developed specifically for this thesis was programmed to create CI simulations matching individual CI perception. 20 German-speaking CI users rated the similarity of simulations to their CI hearing using a 10-point scale. Substantial interindividual variability was found. Psychoacoustic and objective tests quantified variability in CI sound quality. The sound quality saturates to excellent sound quality for large CI experiences (> 6 years). The results highlight the role of neuronal plasticity and the value of CI simulations for research and education. | eng |
